Acupuncture for Digestive Wellness

Digestive health is an important part of overall well-being. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, digestion is viewed as closely connected to energy, sleep, stress and the body’s ability to function at its best.

Symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, constipation, loose stools, reflux or changes in appetite can affect much more than digestion—and they’re often concerns people hesitate to talk about.

That’s why digestive health is a routine part of your initial assessment. These conversations are handled openly and professionally, helping me understand the bigger picture and develop a treatment plan based on your individual symptoms and overall health.

How acupuncture can help

Acupuncture can be incorporated into a broader approach to digestive health for people experiencing concerns such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, irregular bowel habits or digestive symptoms that become more noticeable during periods of stress.

The connection between stress and digestion is particularly important. If your symptoms consistently worsen during busy, demanding or emotionally difficult periods, that pattern provides valuable information. Rather than looking at digestion in isolation, Traditional Chinese Medicine considers how stress, sleep, diet, energy and other aspects of your health may be influencing your symptoms.

Treatment is individualized based on your specific digestive patterns, overall health and the factors that may be contributing to how you feel.

Acupuncture is complementary care and does not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment. New, persistent, severe or changing digestive symptoms should always be discussed with your healthcare provider. When medical care is needed, acupuncture can work alongside it as part of a more comprehensive approach to your health.

What your treatment plan may look like

Digestive symptoms can change gradually, so progress is assessed over time rather than by how you feel on any single day. We look for meaningful changes in your overall digestive pattern and adjust your treatment as your body responds.

  1. Comprehensive first visit

Your first appointment includes an in-depth assessment of your digestion, diet, stress, sleep and overall health, along with an AcuGraph assessment. Your first acupuncture treatment is provided during the same visit.

  2. Active treatment

Treatment typically begins with regular sessions while we monitor changes in your symptoms and overall digestive patterns. Your treatment plan evolves with your progress.

  3. Ongoing care

As symptoms become more manageable and improvements are maintained, appointments can gradually be spaced further apart. Some patients choose periodic treatments for ongoing support or return more frequently during times of increased stress or when digestive symptoms begin to reappear.

Your questions, answered

Should I eat before my appointment?

It’s generally a good idea to have something to eat within a few hours before your appointment rather than arriving on a completely empty stomach.

Do I need a diagnosis before coming in?

No, but if your symptoms are new, severe, or changing, please have them assessed by your physician as well. Acupuncture should complement, not replace, appropriate medical care.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

Most private insurance plans in New Brunswick cover acupuncture. You will receive a receipt after every session to submit to your provider.
