Acupuncture for Sleep
Good sleep affects nearly every aspect of how you feel and function. Difficulty falling asleep, waking throughout the night, restless sleep or waking feeling unrefreshed can leave you struggling with low energy, poor concentration, irritability and increased sensitivity to stress and pain.
Sleep concerns rarely exist in isolation. Stress, hormonal changes, pain, digestion and other factors can all influence the quality of your sleep—which is why treatment looks beyond the symptom of insomnia alone.
Acupuncture offers a complementary approach to supporting better sleep by addressing your individual patterns and the factors that may be contributing to disrupted rest. The goal is not simply more hours of sleep, but helping you wake feeling more rested, restored and ready for your day.
How acupuncture can help
Traditional Chinese Medicine takes an individualized approach to sleep. Your specific sleep pattern is considered alongside your stress levels, digestion, energy, body temperature, health history and other symptoms to develop a treatment plan tailored to you.
Someone who struggles to fall asleep may have a very different pattern from someone who wakes at the same time every night or sleeps for eight hours but never feels rested. Understanding these differences helps guide your treatment.
Your first appointment includes a comprehensive assessment to explore not only how you sleep, but what may be influencing your sleep. From there, acupuncture can be incorporated into a broader approach to supporting relaxation, sleep quality and overall well-being.
Acupuncture is complementary care and can be used alongside healthy sleep habits and conventional medical treatment. If your symptoms suggest that further medical assessment may be appropriate, I will always encourage you to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
What your treatment plan may look like
Sleep patterns often improve gradually rather than overnight. Instead of focusing on a single good or difficult night, we look for meaningful changes over time—such as falling asleep more easily, waking less often and feeling more rested in the morning.
-
Comprehensive first visit
Your first appointment includes a detailed assessment of your sleep patterns, overall health and factors that may be affecting your rest, along with an AcuGraph assessment. Your first acupuncture treatment is provided during the same visit.
-
Active treatment
Treatment typically begins with regular sessions while we monitor how your sleep responds. We look for changes in how easily you fall asleep, how often you wake, the quality of your sleep and how you feel during the day. Your treatment is adjusted as your patterns change.
-
Ongoing care
As your sleep becomes more consistent, appointments can gradually be spaced further apart. Some patients choose periodic treatments for ongoing support or return when changes in stress, health or lifestyle begin affecting their sleep again.
Your questions, answered
Should I keep a sleep log before my first visit?
It helps but it is not required. Even rough notes on what time you fall asleep, when you wake, and how you feel in the morning give me far more to work with than a general sense that sleep is bad.
Can I still take my sleep medication?
Many people receiving acupuncture also take medications. Please provide an accurate list of your medications and supplements during your initial consultation. Acupuncture should complement, not replace, appropriate medical care or prescribed treatment.
Will I be able to sleep during treatment?
Quite often, yes. A fair number of people fall asleep on the table, which is a perfectly good sign and nothing to apologize for.
How many treatments will I need?
There isn’t one answer that applies to everyone. It depends on how long the pattern has been in place and how your body responds. We will discuss your plan together and reassess your progress as we go.
